Abstract

This internationally acclaimed film, based on the 1959 novel of the same title by Nobel laureate Günter Grass, portrays the horrors of World War II through the eyes of a child. Oskar Matzerath refuses to grow past the age of three. He communicates with his family and outside world through piercing screams and his tin drum. He rejects the world of violence, betrayal, and complicity created by adults, including his family. When Nazis invade the free state of Danzig, Oskar protests through his drum, communicating the chaos and confusion that surround him.
