Abstract

In 1913, there were empires and monarchies, women wore long dresses and mostly worked at home Education and independence were anything but a given. But the ancestral conditions turned upside down when war broke out in 1914 and women in many places took over responsibility in factories, military hospitals, companies and in agriculture. When the war ended in 1918, there was no longer an Emperor or a Tsar, clothes became shorter, and women's self-confidence increased. Now they were asserting the right to vote in Germany and Austria. Antonia Meiners uses portraits of well-known and unknown women and many private documents to guide us through a time at the end of which the world was a different place, especially for women.
