Abstract

This volume is the biography of Barbel, the author's mother. Born in Silesia in eastern Germany, Barbel grew up under Nazi rule. Her small community survived wartime shortages and extremist policies, but circumstances took a turn for the worse when post-war agreements ceded her hometown area to Poland under Soviet communist rule. The nineteen-year-old Barbel was desperate to get out of communist Poland. Her strategy for escape took her to a West German refugee camp, then Munster, Germany where she met her future husband, a Serbian displaced person who used to be a prisoner of war. This biography follows their marriage and immigration to the United States with the adventures and culture shock that ensues.
