Abstract

According to Carl Schmitt, all political concepts and ideas refer to the political distinction between friend and foe whose final consequences are expressed in war or revolution. But what enabled the state to send millions of its citizens into the war by reverting to the nation's legitimating formula? Against the background of this question, Jörn Leonhard examines the origin, change and variety of the national legitimation patterns resulting from the experience of warlike violence. On a synchronous level, he systematically compares France, Germany, Great Britain and the United States in the longue durée from the Seven Years' War to the First World War. The work was awarded the Werner Hahlweg Prize in 2006.
