Abstract

During the First World War, the western democracies sought to defend their liberal achievements against the Central Powers. The war, however, turned out to be a fundamental break in the twentieth century, paving the way to later totalitarian developments. In this volume, the authors illuminate the many upheavals of the period between 1900 and 1930: the political, spatial, and ethnic reordering of Europe, the resulting social upheavals—even beyond Europe's borders—and the remaking of identities. The battlefields of the Great War became the birthplace of "new people"—pacifists, emancipated women, Bolsheviks, and fascists. They expected nothing less than to radically transform society and to make a clean break with history.
