Kamerad Schwester 1914–1919

This war diary by Helene Mierisch, a German voluntary nurse who experienced the First World War as one of 90,000 German nurses in field hospitals, describes her way to the Western Front, her move to the Russian Eastern Front and her return home. The diary was first published in 1934, at the beginning of the National Socialist era, and republished in 1941, a time when the Nazi regime wanted to mobilize more young and single women for nursing service in the German Red Cross during the Second World War.
