Abstract | This volume examines the impact of the wars in the Atlantic world between 1770 and 1830, focusing both on the military, economic, political, social and cultural demobilization that occurred immediately at their end, and their long-term legacy and memory. The book brings together an international team of scholars whose research offers the basis for a comparative exploration of how the peoples of the Atlantic World confronted the challenge of peace. In so doing, it not only sheds light on an aspect of this period that has been characterized by relative neglect; it also offers the potential for further comparison between demobilization in this age, and similar demobilizations following later ‘total wars’. |
