Abstract

In this diary, the author recounts her experiences as a nurse during the Second Boer War in the Irene concentration camp, widely regarded to be the worst concentration camp of all the camps into which the British Army forced civilians. The diary provides details about the camp, including the persistent incidence of serious illness, the severe shortage of medical staff at the camp before and during the author's arrival, and the morbid obsession with death among the inmates of the camp.
