Abstract

Funded by Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Digital Public Library of America has developed from ideas that have been percolating since the 1990s. The site launched in 2013, and aims to link collections of museums, libraries, and other repositories across the United States to make them available to teachers, students, and researchers. Presenting maps, timelines, and online exhibitions, the library's richness is in its primary sources, sorted into thematic collections and numbering at present over 14 million.
