Abstract

A subversive film made during World War II, director Vittorio de Sica hides a message of resistance within a comedic drama about the Italian Wars of Unification. A woman looks back on her youth, when she and another girl fell for a Garibaldian soldier who sought refuge after being wounded in battle in a convent and all-girls boarding school. The Garibaldian soldier is quickly discovered by the nuns, who report him to the Bourbon soldiers. The girls improvise a desperate scheme in order to save the soldier and they are successful. Neither of them, however, is successful in reuniting with the soldier after his escape as he dies in battle serving among Garibaldi's ranks.
