Abstract | Senso is a 1954 Italian historical melodrama film, an adaptation of Camillo Boito's Italian novella Senso, written around 1882, by the Italian director Luchino Visconti. Senso is set in Italy around 1866, the year the Third Italian War of Independence would see the Veneto and most of Friuli-Venezia Giulia united to Italy after the Seven Weeks' War between Austria on one side and Prussia and Italy on the other. A performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore ends up in confusion due to an anti-Austrian demonstration, organised by Count Ussoni. His cousin, Countess Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli) falls in love with vile Austrian Lieutenant Franz Mahler (Farley Granger), risking her family ties, social status, and fortune. When he spurns her, she enacts revenge. |
