Tsuchi to heitai / Mud and Soldiers

Using cinematic realism, director Tomotaka Tasaka documents he day-to-day travails and camaraderie of Japanese soldiers in a Japanese army unit during the early years of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). As the unit advances into mainland China, injured soldiers remain behind rather than slow others' down.
