Abstract

Catharina Margaretha Linck was the last woman to be executed in Europe for so-called fornication between women. Disguised as a man since the age of 15, she first tried her luckless hand as a prophet in a radical pietist sect, then fought as a musketeer in the War of Spanish Succession for several years, and finally got married with another woman in Halberstadt in 1717 under the name of Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengel. Betrayed by her suspicious mother-in-law, the exposed impostor was put on trial, in which the corpus delicti, a "stuffed male limb made of leather", was exceptionally acknowledged. The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I personally sentenced her to death. The book traces Catharina Linck's daring life path and discusses the questions raised by her paradigmatic case in the history of sexuality and identity construction, early modern legal and social history, and gender studies. Complemented by the imprint of the bizarre court records, this historical study is at the same time a picaresque novel full of tragic comedy. [Publisher]
