Abstract

This article examines the class hierarchy among residents of Virginia during the American Revolution by critically evaluating the long-held perspective that the need for racial unity smoothed over class divisions in Virginia and created a shared commitment to racial slavery, which was the basis of a cohesive white culture in the eighteenth century. The author dismisses this theory by pointing to division among whites due to economic inequality.
