Abstract

The Túpac Amaru rebellion was an Inca uprising in 1780 that sought to improve the conditions of indigenous Peruvians subject to Spanish rule. The rebellion was one of many indigenous Peruvian uprisings in the last part of the 18th century. It began with the capture and killing of the Governor Antonio de Arriaga on November 4, 1780.  Túpac Amaru was evenually captured and executed. At the same time, on May 18, 1781, in an effort to acculturate Incans to Spanish rule, claims to Incan identity and their cultural traditions were forbidden. However, even after the death of Amaru, Incan revolt still swept through much of what is today southern Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Spanish explorers used the word cacique as a title to designate the leader or chief of indigenous groups they encountered in the Americas.
