Abstract

As a collection of conference papers (presented at the University of West Indies, Mona, October 18-19, 1991), this volume is intended to reinforce a dialogue that is at once intercultural and interdisciplinary. This book examines the nature and mechanism of maronage and Maroon culture in the Caribbean and the Caribbean/Americas. Maroon chiefs and research scholars discuss Maroon oral traditions, religion and politics, resistance and guerrilla warfare, music and dance, and Maroon herbal medicine; and historiographic themes in the cultural history of the Caribbean/Americas are identified with African continuities.
