Abstract

This book shows the interlocking of Heinrich Himmler's "Schutzstaffel", the SS (Protection Squadon) with the steering committee of the German Red Cross (DRK) between 1937 and 1945, which has been insufficiently researched so far. As a result of an extensive evaluation of sources, the author documents who the leading SS men were who guided the fate of the DRK since 1937 and how they managed to fill the most important positions in the leadership organization of the German Red Cross with SS personnel in the following years. In addition, the question is explored as to what interest Heinrich Himmler's "Schutzstaffel" might have had in these personnel overlaps with the DRK and how the SS was able to exploit the resources of the aid organization for its own purposes. Last but not least, this will draw attention to a sphere of influence of the SS that has not played a role in previous research on the "Schutzstaffel".
