Abstract | For the first time in Swiss history, this edited volume systematically combines the approaches of gender and military history for a study of the development of the military in Switzerland bezween 1918 and 1945 and places it in its European context. The authors, historians from Germany, Sitzerland and other countries, provide answers to the following questions: To what extent did the civil and military spheres interact and what role did gender attributions play in this? What is the connection between sympathies for authoritarian political systems and the ideology of masculinity? Was the fact that Switzerland largely spared combat operations during the First and Second World War the reason that Swiss women only received the right to vote and to vote in 1971? To what extent did the retreat of the Swiss army into the Alpine Reduit and the admission of Polish soldiers from 1940 call into question the prevailing gender relations? How did the Swiss army and gender discourses differ from those abroad, and where were the parallels? The systematic use of "gender" as a "category of analysis" (Joan W. Soott) opens up new perspectives on a controversial epoch in Swiss history that has been widely discussed in recent years. |
