Abstract | This popular propaganda film of the Soviet Realist era celebrates Vasily Ivanovich Chapayev (1887–1919), a Red Army commander who became a hero of the Russian Civil War (1917–1922). It is based on the novel of the same name by Dmitri Furmanov, a Russian writer and Bolshevik commissar who fought together with Chapayev. Chapaev, an illiterate son of peasants, proves to be a brilliant strategist against the White Army. His friendship with Dimitry Furmanov reveals the central role of the Communist Party, a message the directors intentionally conveyed to support Stalin's nation-building. |
