Abstract

Come and See is a 1985 Soviet anti-war film, whose screenplay is based on the 1978 book I Am from the Fiery Village by three Belarusian writers, Ales Adamovich, Janka Bryl, and Vladimir Kolesnik. The book is a collection of stories from survivors from the burned villages during World War II. The director, Elem Klimov, had to fight eight years of censorship from the Soviet authorities before he could be allowed to produce the film in its entirety. The film plot follows Florya, a young man, who joins the weary Belarusian Resistance fighters against his family's wishes after the invasion of his village by German forces. There he meets a girl, Glasha (Olga Mironova), who accompanies him back to his village. Upon returning home, Florya finds his family and fellow peasants massacred. His continued survival amidst the brutal debris of war becomes increasingly nightmarish, a battle between despair and hope. Since its release, Come and See has received positive reviews and wide acclaim.
