Abstract

The Illustrated Bartsch is an extensive compendium of European Old Master prints and commentary, based on the 21 volume Le Peintre-Graveur, by Adam von Bartsch (1757-1821), published in the early nineteenth century, which listed the prints and gave a concise description without illustrations. The Illustrated Bartsch collection holds more than 50,000 images (engravings, etchings, woodcuts, etc.) from the 15th Century to the early 19th Century, embodying the work of hundreds of printmakers. The digitized collection offers all of the images (scanned mostly from 5×7 in. black-and-white photographic prints) and cataloging information found in the first 96 volumes of this exhaustive reference work.
