Abstract

In this book chapter on "Italian Widows of the First World War" by Francesca Lagorio published in the edited volume Authority, Identity, and the Social History of the Great War the author explores the situation of war widows in Italy during World War I, especially their material support by the government and their social and cultural place in society. The total number of women widowed as a result of the First World War is estimated to be 3 to 4 million, the number for Italy was  around 200,000 widows.
