Abstract | An epic drama film directed and produced by Richard Attenborough, Cry Freedom is set in late-1970s apartheid-era South Africa. It delves into the ideas of discrimination, political corruption, and the repercussions of violence. The screenplay was based on two books by journalist Donald Woods (1933-2001) on his friendship with black activist Steve Biko (1946-1977). Working at the time as chief editor at the liberal newspaper "Daily Dispatch" in South Africa, Woods investigated the circumstances behind Biko's death while in police custody. Woods's investigative work led him to eventually to flee the country. The film received favorable reviews and was allowed to be screened in South African cinemas without cuts or restrictions, despite the publication of Biko's writings being banned at the time of its release. |
