Abstract | This article on women and pacifism in Ireland between 1915 and 1932 explores the incolvement of women on different sites in the Irish struggle for independence. The Irish War of Independence was a conflict between the British state and its forces in Ireland and Irish republican guerrillas in the Irish Volunteers or Irish Republican Army. The war is usually said to have run between 1919 and 1921, but violence both preceded these dates and continued afterwards. In this conflict women played an often overlooked role, some supported the violent independent struggle, other opposed it and lobbied for peace negotiations with the argument that it were mainly women and children who became the vctims of the struggle. |
