Abstract | A little noted aspect of America's involvement in World War I concerns the struggle of black women nurses to serve in the United States Army Nurse Corps. Although this particular quest for unfettered access and professional opportunities proved futile, it is nevertheless a revealing case study in both the military history of America and in the history of black women. This article, a brief examination of the nature and extent of the United States government's staunch resistance to the inclusion of black women nurses in "the fight to make the world safe for democracy", illuminates some of the contours and implications of Armed Forces interracial relations and policies. |
