Muslim Women and War on Terror

Muslim women have specific and well-documented problems of patriarchal oppression to overcome, more often disguised with a pseudo-religious gloss. These challenges, however, have been made immeasurably more difficult by the war on terror. The purpose of this article is twofold: (i) to highlight through the author's own personal story some of the challenges Muslim women have to encounter both from within their communities and from broader society; and (ii) to argue that genuine solidarity and sisterhood with Muslim women is necessarily predicated by opposition to the anti-Muslim racism that underpins the 'war on terror'.
