Abstract

This translation is based on a classic German study from 1973, that was designed by Jürgen Kocka to demonstrate the fruitfulness of theory and paradigm in historical explanation. It examines the economic challenges the German Empire experienced during World War I to test if and how a Marxist informed approach to social history can help to understand the development in Germany during World War I that led to the November Revolution 1918. The author aspires to epitomize German society as a whole system by seizing upon its salient characteristics in the economy, society and politics during World War I.
