Abstract

This monograph presents the life of María Antonia Bolivar, who, despite being the sister of famed Venezuelan leader, Simon Bolivar, has had little attention paid to her in the annuls of history. It looks at her role in Bolivar's fight against Spanish rule, showing that even though they were family, they didn't necessarily share the same beliefs about Venezuelan freedom; María Antonia Bolivar, unlike her famous brother, was not a supporter of Venezuelan Independence. This book looks at her life and actions, highlighting through her the social situation of women during the Venezuelan fight for Independence.
