This is the fourth volume of a comprehensive eleven-volume history of the Second World War, written from the German perspective. The attack on the Soviet Union was one of the most significant and, in terms of its effects on the political history of Europe, one of the most lasting events of the Second World War. The book analyzes Hitler's long-term goals towards the USSR and the foreign policy, ideological, economic and military measures taken by the German leadership after the French campaign. In addition to the operational planning for the »Barbarossa« company, the general conditions of the war economy and armaments efforts are also dealt with. Some European states and volunteers joined the so-called "crusade against Bolshevism" with different objectives. In addition to economic goals, the occupation policy also pursued programmatic NS "reorganization" ideas. The investigation of the other side deals with the objectives of Soviet foreign policy and the Red Army's preparations for war. The description of the operations of the belligerents deals with the mighty cauldron battles in the initial phase, the struggle for the Ukraine, the encirclement of Leningrad, the fighting in the Finnish area up to the failure of the German offensive off Moscow. The unexpected Soviet counter-offensive caused a deep leadership crisis on the German side. With the failure of Operation Barbarossa and the formation of the Anti-Hitler Coalition, Germany was at the turn of the war.
