Abstract | The historiography of Spanish America in the eighteenth century has often been written in terms of the nature and effects of the Bourbon reforms. More recent research into the subject of domestic protest in Andean America has begun to question simple correlations of social and economic dislocation with rebellion in late colonial Peru and has also suggested the need for alternative interpretive schemes which extend the geographical focus of these insurrections outward from their presumed center in Cuzco to other areas. This chapter explores the relationship between rebel ideology and the organizational structure of insurrection between 1780 and 1782, and as such is intended as a contribution to the reinterpretation of colonial Andean social movements. |
