Abstract

Why did women voluntarily join the SS female assistant corps set up by Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler in 1942? This study answers this question. It includes the organizational history of the SS women's corps and uses numerous sources to examine the application process, the social profile of the women, their everyday training and their deployments in the German Reich and in the occupied territories. Jutta Mühlenberg's study reveals the naturalness with which many women worked in SS departments and the way in which they contributed to maintaining the Nazi system of rule in the final years of the war.
