Abstract | This chapter by art historian David O'Brien in the edited volume War Memories: The Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars in Modern European Cultur explores the special relationship between the large-scale paintings commissioned by the Napoleonic regime and memories of the Napoleonic wars from the Empire down to the present. The paintings are considered as “lieux de mémoire,” as this term has been defined in the work of Pierre Nora. The chapter considers the strengths of Nora’s account while at the same time critiquing and important aspect of it. |
