Abstract

How do specific gender constructions contribute to legitimizing the "war on terror" and the German participation in the war? In war discourses, not only national but also gender identities and images are drafted and renegotiated. Andrea Nachtigall shows on the basis of the reporting of German print media on the 11th of September 2001 and the Afghanistan war, how the media interpretation of the events goes along with the construction of sex. In particular, the function and mobilizability of gender in the context of war and »terror« are critically examined. The material-rich study also illustrates the benefits of feminist and gender-related analyzes for political science.
