Abstract

Like no other event in recent European history, the wars in former Yugoslavia demonstrated the centrality of collective memory in the social processes of national homogenization and mobilization for national action. The dissolution of Yugoslavia and the post-Yugoslav wars have, meanwhile, become a thing of the past and an object of the politics of remembrance or of the struggles for supremacy in the determination of the past. Remembrance of these wars will determine the future of Southern Europe.
