Abstract | After the First World War, the concept of the »Volksgemeinschaft« (National Community) has had a political boom in the discourse of almost all parties in Germany. But while for social democrats the term was a synonym for the inclusive unity of all working people, the "national community" in the right, especially among the National Socialists, was determined primarily by exclusion. It was not so much the question of who belonged to the "Volksgemeinschaft" that concerned them, but rather who was not allowed to belong to it, first and foremost the Jews. For this reason, anti-Semitism was of central importance for the practical politics of the Nazi regime in respect of the "Volksgemeinschaft". This books explores the discourse on the »Volksgemeinschaft« in conservative, nationalist and National Socialist groups, especially outside of the larger German cities, in the "province", and its effects for the constructions of the inclusion and exclusion to the "German people". One of the excluded groups were German-Jews. Soon the discours would lead to antisemitic violence that escalated after the seizure of power by the Nazis in January 1933. |
