Abstract

"For a long time, I ignored the tragedy which befell Ciociaria, my region of origin in Italy, in the spring of 1944, the innumerable injustices perpetrated by the "Liberators," the French colonial troops, when they encountered the civilian population: the rape of women, men, boys, or girls, in front of their loved ones. Through sexual outrage, French soldiers hammered defeat and humiliation into the flesh of Italians. For a long time, I ignored the hell that the families of this land, between sea and mountain, from where I come, had endured for nine months. I had heard my grandparents and parents evoke the wartime years, the fascists and the Germans, hunger and malaria, life in France after. But never a word on the violence committed there by the French contingent. In the summer of 2015, I wanted to open the shroud of oblivion, lift the veil of shame, follow in the footsteps of the "Marocchinate," those thousands of Italian women raped in 1944 by soldiers of the French Expeditionary Force, and forgotten." This volume traces the author's fact-finding journey about the tragic trauma inflicted on Italian women by the French Expeditionary Force.
