Abstract | This internationally acclaimed film presents the true story of a conscientious objector who won the Medal of Honor for his service during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. Desmond Doss volunteers for the U.S. Army with aspirations of being a medic. He objects to killing and refuses to hold or fire a weapon for religious reasons, which elicits hostility and a court martial at basic training. Once in the Pacific, Doss and his platoon try to take Maeda Escarpment ("Hacksaw Ridge"), an impossible terrain occupied by the Japanese that has resulted in countless deaths. Without using firearms or other weapons, Doss manages to save 75 men. |
