Gee! I Wish I Were a Man: Gender and the Great War

Americanist scholarship on gender and the Great War remains relatively underdeveloped, especially compared to Europeanist analogues. In the 1990s, though, historians of the United States began redressing that imbalance. Their work, along with other scholarship on gender, shows that the Great War exposed and invested with fresh urgency long-simmering tensions over the proper character and roles of American men and women—tensions between gender tradition and gender upheaval. This book chapter offers an excellent introdcution into the scholareship.
