Abstract

This book analyzes the rise of paramilitary organizations and their fateful impact on political life in the Weimar Republic. This work is the first to examine the militarization in German politics, analyzing the cycle of violence and counter-violence which began after the the German Revolution of 1918, looking at the revolts of 1923, the "golden years" of the Twenties, and culminating in the self-destruction of the Wehrverbande in the last years of the Weimar Republic. This study looks at movements on both the left and right of the political spectrum, and their ruthless commitments to political life.
