Abstract

Changing values, individualisation and female emancipation are catchwords that have played a major role in the public and academic debate of the last decade. How do the discussions affect the soldier, whose military environment is still in a tense relationship to social development trends? The present study examines this question both theoretically and empirically. From a theoretical perspective, the focus is on the relationship between the military and social subjectivity development. The male connotation of the military puts gender relations at the centre of interest. The study provides information about the way in which social changes find their way into the Bundeswehr, how they are processed by the individual soldier, but also which crises and conflicts are caused by social change - especially at times of serious political upheaval.
