De la Violencia y de las Mujeres: España, 1808-1918

Throughout the nineteenth century, Spain valued the image of the woman as the "angel of the home", who looked after the well-being of her family, and this gave rise to a long list of women who were represented mainly as victims of violence. In contrast to this stereotype, this book shows that, in the face of the violence of the wars and socio-political conflicts that followed one another from 1808 to 1918, Spanish women were involved in charitable activities, writing, militating, and defending their rights, sometimes resorting to violence themselves. The twelve contributions in this volume study the literary, journalistic and iconographic representations and the uses made of it, not without reserving a place for women's reflection on violence.
