Abstract

Suzanne Spaak’s is a deeply moving story of unfailing courage in the face of evil. Spaak, born in 1905 into an upper middle class Catholic Belgian family, settled in Paris in 1937 with her husband, a successful playwright. When the war broke out, she joined the Resistance without hesitation and leaned on her fortune and social prestige to recruit accomplices in the occupied capital. Right under the nose of the Germans, Suzanne and other women from many groups of resisting Jews and Christians “kidnapped” hundreds of Jewish children to save them from deportation and the gas chambers. Suzanne would pay for her immense willpower and fearlessness: captured by the Gestapo, she would be executed shortly before the Liberation. [translated and modified from author]
