Abstract

Through the lens of three Canadian cities during the First World War, Robert Rutherdale shows how the everyday lives of people in very different local settings were affected by their perceptions of a distant war. Drawing on extensive archival sources and daily newspapers of the period, he brings us into the communities of Lethbridge, Alberta, Guelph, Ontario, and Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, where, though miles and worlds away from the fighting overseas, involvement in the war effort and the subsequent stories of the war helped shape Canada's collective memory.
