Sexual violence has always been fateful and inexorably linked to armed conflicts until becoming one of the hallmarks of the new wars. As women and girls are their most numerous and visible victims, they also affect men and boys and often involve the commission of international crimes that endanger international peace and security. Its size and gravity explain that it occupies a priority place in the agenda of States, International Organizations and Civil Society. However, both politically and legally, it is far from exhaustive or resolved. On the contrary, the debate on its analytical assumptions remains open because, despite their increasing visibility, the statistics do not accurately reflect their scope and consequences. This book responds, based on a holistic analysis, to issues as relevant as the new roles and plurality of perpetrators and victims of sexual violence, their process of prohibition and criminalization through the construction of an international legal framework, the different types international crimes of sexual violence, the procedural and procedural aspects and the technical and practical obstacles that their prosecution and punishment elicit, and what we have called the institutionalized international action against sexual violence in conflicts, which emerged within the framework of the Women, Peace and Security "of the UN.
