Abstract

The two volumes present the entire military history of France from the Merovingians to the present day, in two volumes. That war contributed to the institutional and social construction of France is obvious, especially since the army represents a founding element of the nation-state. In order to better understand the nature of the ties uniting the French to their army as well as the war to the State, the authors cover 1,500 years of French history. This first volume opens with the Merovingians and concludes with the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
