Abstract

Boetie op Manoeuvres,  directed by Regardt van den Bergh, is the sequel to the commercially successful 1984 South African  film Boetie Gaan Border Toe!The film is set again during the "South African Border War", or the Namibian War of Independence (1966-1990), which was fought between the South African Defence Force (SADF) and the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), an armed wing of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO). The plot follows Boetie van Tonder, portrayed once again by Arnold Vosloo, and his adventures as part of a unit with the SADF. Together with its 1984 prequel, the films have been criticized for their propagandistic depiction of the South African military and the romanticized outlook on the South African Border War. If instructors want to use this propaganda film they will have to critically contextualize and anaylze it.
