Abstract

After the defeat of the Third Reich, the family achieved  extreme importance in postwar West German culture, society and politic. The family was perceived especially in Christian-conservative circles as the central institution to reorder and stabilize the postwar society.  This monograph examines the  role of the family in the est-German society from1945 to 1960 and the related family politics. It takes up the phenomenon of the housing shortage and thematizes the urban and architectural concepts in their effect on post-war families. It explores the type and course of employment in the life of wives and mothers and describes their influence on the family as an institution. And it depicts the generative behavior of families and shows that in the 1960s a new generation of women is growing up whose concept of family is completely different from that of their mothers.
