Abstract

Almost everyone knows the famous picture that Robert Capa took in liberated France in the summer of 1944: It shows a clipped young woman who is being driven through an apparently excited crowd with a baby in her arms. Like her, at the end of the war all over Europe women who had a relationship with German Wehrmacht soldiers were insulted as "German bitches" and "traitors", and they were often punished even though what they had done had not violated any applicable law. For the women affected, the war never stopped because they remained ostracized in their home countries. They paid the price for a flirtation, an infatuation, a love for life that German men often secretly thought back on for a life. This book is one of the first  that explored this subject.
