Abstract

This Oscar-winning film, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, focuses on the American General George S. Patton (1885-1945) during World War II. From campaigns in North Africa to Italy and Germany, Patton ruthlessly pursues the Germans in his quest to bring victory to the Allies. But his love of war and insistence on discipline, as well as his physically demanding maneuvers, cost him the command of the Allied invasion of northern France. Patton's overt militarism later served as an anti-war message in early 1970s America.
