Abstract

In her sixties at the outbreak of World War I, Antonietta Giacomelli, a writer and third order Franciscan, became a volunteer nurse and later published two diaries about her experiences. At the outbreak of the First World War she moved to Milan, where she worked as a nurse in the hospital of Porta Vigentina, and then returned, at the end of the war, to Rovereto. Here she successfully founded the local section of the Unione Nazionale Giovani Esploratrici Italiane (National Union of Young Italian Women Explorers).
